Jamaican studies in nutrition and child development, and their implications for national development

چکیده
Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is diagnosed by comparing children’s anthropometric measurements with reference values for their age and sex. It is estimated that 177 million children under 5 years of age in developing countries have weights-for-age below two standard deviations of their expected value. Low weight-for-height (wasting) is less common but low height-for-age (stunting) is estimated to affect 35% of children between 24 and 59 months of age (Grant, 1991). If PEM has a detrimental effect on children’s mental development the implications are obviously enormous. In the present paper, studies which have addressed this problem in Jamaica over the last 15 years will be discussed. No attempt is made to review the international literature which has been reviewed recently (Simeon & Grantham-McGregor, 1990). First those studies concerning severe and mild to moderate PEM in young children will be discussed, then studies conducted in school-aged children.

Combating Agricultural Child Labour for National Development: Implications for the Millenium Development Goals in Nigeria
A simmering crisis in the Nigerian agriculture today involves labour and the crisis manifests itself in the degree of labour availability, labour demand and labour productivity. Agriculture ranks as one of the three most dangerous work activities, along with mining and co...
متن کاملComprehensive longitudinal studies of child health, development and behaviour in Jamaica: findings and policy impact.
BACKGROUND Birth cohort and other longitudinal studies of children's health, development and behaviour have provided important information on child and adult outcomes. This has allowed evidence based policy and programme development targeted at issues specific to countries. Few studies have been conducted in developing countries. This paper reports on the findings and policy implications of two...
متن کاملJamaican studies in nutrition and child development, and their implications for national development.
In a hospital in Jamaica, a study compared the developmental levels of 18 children suffering from severe protein energy malnutrition (PEM) with those of 15 sufficiently nourished children. Even though both groups had low scores on the Griffiths' test, the malnourished children had a significantly lower score than the controls. Upon recovery, both groups improved at the same speed, resulting i...

The present study aimed to explore effects of educating mothers about the national child development screening plan on identifying children with abnormal development. M...
